Ian is a Professor of Colorectal Surgery, and adult lead of the NZ National Intestinal Failure Service - a key opinion leader. Ian has been an international pioneer of nutrient recycling.
Gil is an active member of several international nutrition societies, including ASPEN (USA), ESPEN (Europe), FELANPE (Latin America) and has been a council member of BAPEN (UK), the Nutrition Societies of UK and NZ. He is a past chairman of the British Pharmaceutical Nutrition Group and was vice-president of the Australasian Society of Parenteral & Enteral Nutrition (AuSPEN). He is the 2025 ASPEN Nutrition Champion.
